How long until I can get out of my at&t contract?

I've been using a phone with at&t for about 5 months now but I want a different phone. The phone I would be getting would still be at&t, but a downgrade. Do I have to wait the full 2 years or is it possible to get out now. I know getting out now will be around $200, but what about in a year (is there any time it would be cheaper)?

It will still be around $200 in 1 year, I'd just pay the $200 if you want a new phone that bad. But good luck.

No, you have to wait for your plan to be up in order to get your new phone without having to pay the $200.

Well if your not going to cancel your contract you can buy a new phone at anytime.
It won't be cheap at alll. Because when you buy a phone w/ a contract its on sale because you are agreeing to pay a bill every month for at least 2 years. When you get a phone and you already have the contract you paying full price. If you wait a while you do get discounts.
But if your canceling your contract all together, its not going to get any cheaper if you were to cancel it today or the day before your 2 years is up.

You can get out now, but it will cost you. The ETF (Early Termination Fee) started off at $175 on the day you signed the latest contract. If it was a 2 year contract (most of them are), your ETF is reduced by $5 each month you're into your contract. If you cancel now, it'd probably be around $150. If you were to cancel and get a new phone for the reduced price, you'd have to get a new phone number and pay an activation fee for that new phone, and it's a lot of hassle. You should consider buying the phone at full, retail price to avoid the headache. You might be able to get it off ebay.

If you have At&t and want an At&t phone, you do not have to cancel your contract or pay an ETF. You would however have to buy a new phone at the full retail price or purchase one off of ebay or another third party provider.

You can't do that. You have to by the phone out right,If you terminated the contract, you are going to have to pay a large deposit to be able to use them again.(Like 800+ dollars) plus your fee for cancelling the contract.
Having a cell phone is a Luxury, not a right, they might not even take you back.
If you want to stay with att, check ebay for the cheapest prices for the phone you like or sites like that, the att store can be expensive.

Susan
You can get a new phone at a discounted rate at the time when you have had you phone for a year and a half.

Ok, Since you only want a different phone not a different provider you have a couple of options that will not require you to end your contract early. If you are willing to purchase the phone outright, just purchase it and have your AT&T service transferred to the new phone. You can keep the same service plan you now have. If you need to change your service plan I believe you can still do that as well without penalty, talk to a AT&T service rep. At some point during your two year contract you will be ellegialbe for a phone "upgrade", read a different phone, as long as you extend your plan for two years. That's two years from the date of the upgrade. You can find out when you can get a new upgrade either through your online account if you are registered at https://www.wireless.att.com or by contacting an ATT&T service rep. You can usually get a better phone "deal" through the website.
