ELECTRONICS question: Help a newbie out...How do I get my TV sound to come out of my surround sound?
Right now I have the cable box connected to the TV with the white cable.
Then I have the Surround sound with dvd player connected to the TV with an S video cable.
When I play a DVD in the surround sound system it works great, but when I am watching tv the sound just comes from the tv not the surround sound.
So what do I need to do??? I have a lot of spare cables laying around, so if I knew HOW to do it I am sure I would be able to.
Connect optical cable or composite cables ( red & white ) from cable box to system inputs.

If your TV is not too old for that, you just have to set it up through it's own on-screen menu..

To get surround sound from your cable you need to send its audio directly to the surround sound system (TVs don't pass surround sound). So try hooking the white cable directly to the surround sound system.

you need to have an audio feed coming from the cable box / tv to the auxiliary input on the surround sound, that way the tv sound signal is playing through the surround sound speakers.

Connect the cable box's audio out L&R to your surround sound (if there aren't an audio out for each of the 5 channels) and you should be all set.
